He Who Dwells

So many times in our lives we wonder, WHERE IS GOD? How can this be happening to me? Why doesn’t someone rescue me? How do I fix this?

I am amazingly blessed. The hardest loss for me to date is the death of a close grandparent. So many others have lost so much more, from the death of a child to the harsh realities of cancer and beyond those pains are those who have suffered from human trafficking or are starving to death. There are so many levels of pain in the world around us, and just because someone is worse off than you, doesn’t always diminish the depth of your own pain.

The verse that has challeneged me and also comforted me in my life pain has been Psalm 91:1. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. It is a promise with a qualifier He who dwells, will rest. It takes action on our part. We have choose to dwell, and dwell in the shelter of the Most High. I don’t know about you, but it is very easy for me to dwell in the shelter of TV, or negative thoughts, or being busy. I also am guilty of wandering around as if I don’t know where my dwelling is. The call in this verse is to dwell in the shelter of the Most High.

Who is the Most High? God, of course, but why did the Psalmist choose this representation of God? I think this can mean different things to different people. For me it is reassuring to see the Most High as the one above all of this mess. He sees it from the beginning to the end. He knows what He is doing. He is all-knowing and all-powerful. He is in control. I can choose to dwell in His shelter, even when I don’t understand or when I don’t know what is happening.

And as if it isn’t enough, just being with the One who is the Most High, the promise of rest….rest in shadow of the Almighty. When I read the name Almighty, is makes God seem invincible, which of course He is. It can be a little intimidating. The picture in my head of little me, RESTING in the shadow of the Almighty though, is very reassuring. It almost a picture of a huge tree, giving a cool resting place in the heat of the noon day soon.

So there it is, why I’m writing this blog. I need something to track when I’m dwelling and resting and when I am wandering. It is so easy to lose sight of the Almighty, Most High God, who wishes for communion with me. It is almost too great to comprehend…but every once in a while I catch a glimpse ..a glimpse of a God who loves me and has called me to be part of His kingdom.
